She fought for her freedom. He's dying without her. Fate doesn't care what either of them wants.
Book 2 of The Dragon's Flame Series. This story stands on its own, set within the world of The Dragon’s Flame. While returning characters make appearances, no prior reading is required. Though readers familiar with the first book may recognise a few extra layers.
Laya survived four brutal Chases to remain unclaimed — the only free female wolf in a generation. She chose scars over submission and solitude over a mate who would strip away everything she'd bled to protect. The last thing she needs is a diplomatic mission into dragon territory.
Kaeldric, advisor to the Dragon King, has been fading for months — his dragon slowly dying because he refused a mate bond he couldn't accept. When he finally finds her, she's everything he dreamed of and nothing he prepared for: a wolf warrior with claws already extended, who would sooner gut him than acknowledge what they both know.
One crumbling railing. One frozen river. One impossible bond neither can outrun.
Stranded in the wilderness with broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder, and only each other, enemies have no choice but to survive together. But surviving is the easy part. When they return to civilisation, their bond will either become the bridge between two warring peoples — or the spark that ignites the war that destroys them both.
A wolf who refuses to be claimed. A dragon who's running out of time. And a mate bond that will demand the one thing neither of them is willing to give.
Explicit sexual content, Violence and physical combat, Attempted sexual assault / non-consensual situation (on-page, not between main characters), Forced participation in a dangerous tradition, Death of a parent (referenced, not on-page) Grief and trauma
Loved how the story is centered around a woman who fights back against tradition that seems to be more for control than anything. The fact that it has dragon shifters is what originally drew me to the first book in the series. The strong independent FMCs Karen Hunter writes about had me wanting …
Laya went through so much, that she build an entire wall of armour to keep everyone out.
Kael almost killed himself because the denial was that strong! His own brother had to take action to prevent losing his own brother due to stubbornness.
All the Alpha’s deserve the same punishment as what all females suffered from due to “tradition” but that’s my opinion. 🤭
Laya protected Kael fiercely even though she didn’t understand her own actions. Kael showed her love is an option without losing your true self 🥹
I won’t lie once the stupid Alpha’s took Laya, I read so fast 🤣 I couldn’t handle it so I read fast enough to find out what will happen so I can enjoy them being together!
4 stars
I really enjoyed the next installment in this series of interconnected series of standalones.
I love that we got to still see what happened with Draven and Seraphine's love story. Plus, we, the reader, get to hear Kael's thoughts and sense of humor on it. Such as accidently interpreting them and " seeing Dray's white ass bobbing " 🤭
I loved Laya's character from the very first page. She literally fought for her right to be free. And you can feel her grit and determination from the very first page. Kael, while protective, has a sense of humor that balances out her serious side and is the perfect mate for her.
My only nitpick is the four Alphas. I felt like they were part of the problem with the conflict with the dragons and how the clans were run. Why were they still allowed to remain in charge?
