Is Meta's new Threads worth it to authors?

Threads is a new exciting social network but is there potential benefit for writers?

Pen Pinery has had a chance to mess with Threads for a couple of days since release and have some thoughts on if Threads is worth using as an author.

First what is Threads?

Threads is Meta's new text based (although it does have picture sharing) social platform that skyrocketed at release but has since become a moderately active platform. Threads was a counter social platform in response to Elon Musk renaming Twitter to X and seeing Twitter become increasingly unstable.

At first people were very interested in Threads but after a couple of weeks, slowly returned to their X account and occasionally return back to Threads just in case, the platform has become mid

This isn't a bad thing...

Looking at Threads vs Instagram, at least threads allows you to link blog posts, Amazon links or anything on the web. Meaning quick access to whatever you are promoting.

That's fantastic and an advantage. Really at this point Threads is a slim copy of Twitter full of potential.

Why Threads still has potential

Until Meta decides that Threads isn't a valuable product, the social platform will continue to exist. With fewer users on the platform, it gives an opportunity for authors to get in early and create a potential larger following than on more established platforms.

We are in the wild-west period of Threads, where any post has the potential to go viral as feeds need to be generated with new content, Threads is more likely to help promote your post if it has a chance to keep users engaged.

This means writers who want to share their publications, a new WIP or an update on their series are in a perfect position to find new readers and spread their word further than normal.

Should you use it?

At the end of the day, the question really comes down to "Why not?"

You are already posting on X, Instagram, FB, and everywher else, you can easily copy and pasted the same content into Threads. (Good news Thread recently released a desktop website version, but requires logging into the app version first.)

It'll only take a couple of extra seconds and the opportunity to benefit you is limitless.

It's a free platform, new and experimental and with very limited down side (unless you count all the privacy concerns that typically come form a Meta product).

What do you think? Will you be using it?
