Fans of folk horror such as "The Wicker Man" will likely see a lot of those works in this quirky British isles setting. The premise is fantastic and the humor starts on the first page, with an interesting and funny dialogue between two unnamed characters. They deliver what readers need to know about the setting before the first chapter starts in a surprisingly easy to follow conversation, despite a lack of quotations or other grammatical signifiers of who is speaking during which sections. This quality of writing and general sense of humor continues throughout the rest of the book as we follow Lizzy, a spirited young woman learning to fend off the next devilish attack on their island. And to be clear, this is the literal devil attacking the island, not a figurative metaphor.

This is a fun, deliberate story with a likeable main character whose perspective is easy to root for. I recommend this for a book club discussion due to the compelling ideas and setting.

Thank you to the publisher and Pen Pinery for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
