Crush in the Cascades

This book manages to do something I didn't think was possible, which is make a reality competition romance feel fresh and unpredictable. The author clearly understands outdoor skills and backpacking culture, which gives all the challenges an authenticity that elevates the story beyond typical romance beats. When Cooper explains the different ways to start a fire or talks about reflection lakes in Colorado, it doesn't feel like exposition dumping. It feels like a character sharing knowledge with someone he's starting to care about.

The relationship development between Amity and Cooper is probably the strongest element here. They start off genuinely antagonistic during the fire challenge, with Cooper being dismissive of her complete lack of outdoor knowledge and Amity being defensive about her incompetence. But instead of having them suddenly fall into each other's arms, the author shows them slowly building respect through the various legs of the competition. The moment where Amity is coaching Miles on his chopping technique and Cooper realizes he's attracted to her voice is such a specific, human detail that it stuck with me. It's not about her being beautiful in a traditional sense at that moment. It's about him being drawn to her effort and her care for her teammate.
