This book was described to me as “witch x mafia” and it is, but for a supernatural story, the organized crime angle drove the plot more than magic. I have been on a kick lately reading enemies-to-lovers tropes, but this was refreshingly not that. Adrian and Eliza are almost irritatingly perfect for each other, matching dry humor and quick wit from the beginning.
I will say that as a simple Midwesterner, some of the technical language tripped me up a little. The legal and architectural jargon were lost on me, and I know nothing of ports or shipping or East Coast geography, so it was hard for me to picture certain scenes properly, but the action and suspense made up for it. The phrasing suited the characters and the story, so it fit.
I was so sucked into the story that the ending caught me off guard…
