Hex Of All Hats is the first book in a new urban fantasy series, The Hexbound Heart Cyle. This book also has links with the author’s Terra Graves series. Set in Chicago, the story begins at the The Spot, a cross-dimensional speakeasy where bar tender Janessa works. Here her role involves more than keeping the drinks flowing, because she is also the ward-keeper. When the ley line which flows beneath the bar faulters, Janessa discovers an infectious sentient spell which infiltrates both the ley line and Janessa herself. This danger to The Spot’s stability and Janessa’s reactions draw the attention of others, some offer to help, while others silently observe. If the ley line destabilises, there could be widespread damage across Chicago and the underworld. This is a fast-paced story set in a very imaginative and believable world. The writing style creates the speed with short sharp sentencing. I liked Janessa and her close friends. There’s more to learn from the situation and the story will continue in book two. The magical systems and characters are numerous, and it is easy to feel half a step behind and quite out of breath with all the action if your attention wanders. It’s good, but I could have done with some slower parts where more time was spent on the main characters and the important settings, just to enjoy the full submersion into their world. |
