Request ARC accessVirginia Roach is a teen mother living hand to mouth on the isolated island chain of Deep Cannaria, a tropical nation that cut itself off from the world in the midst of a magical war that wounded the sky and poisoned the sea with the fall of a dead godling. But that revolution is thirty years gone, and Virginia isn't one for politics. She wants a stable home. She wants to be a telephone line repairwoman or a witch. And she wants to get a good night's sleep. When she's called to meet her recently-paroled mother outside of the capital reformatory, her simple motorcycle trip is interrupted by misfortunes, misadventures, Bewilderness monsters, abyssal mobsters, and a freak hurricane that wails like a terrified baby.
Nothing comes easy in paradise.
I made it 50% throught before DNFing, so I debated even leaving a review. With that being said, I am doing so to express my thoughts, but please disregard if unhappy I did not finish. While I did not mind the story itself, single mother goes on journey to see mother, the “world” vocabulary and building made it hard to keep up at times. I love a sci-fyi and I can deal with imagination, but this book took lots of it and then at other times I simply found myself saying “don’t understand but don’t think it’s to important.” The cover art, amazing, and want to get a physical copy just for that. Thank you for giving me a online copy, I will forever be greatful.
